Arts-led PhD Research University of Plymouth, Dartington College of Arts (2007), partly sponsored by Dartington College of Arts and supervised by Prof. Dr. Edward Cowie.

The MoverWitness exchange (MWE) is a pedagogical method that frames observations within a participative and performative model of a ‘mover’ and a ‘witness’ and can be applied within a diverse range of disciplines. It enables collaboration, learning and research in the fields of dance pedagogy, performance arts, arts pedagogy and arts therapies.

The trajectory of my PhD research (Dartington College of Arts/University of Plymouth 2007) was to deconstruct, theorise and visualise a practice known as 'Authentic Movement'. (Pallaro, Whitehouse, Chodorow, Adler, 1999, 2001) from the field of Dance Movement Psychotherapy. My visualisations, for instance through the development and use of ‘camera-witnessing’, and my theoretical analysis of context and content facilitated a methodological reassessement of this practice's workings. Re-framed as a phenomenological approach for emotionally intelligent, empathetic exchanges across different ways of perceiving and understanding, MWE facilitates aesthetic perceptions and reflective analysis of world and self.

Research-related images and films can be found on the Art and Movement pages of this website. MWE as a method and methodology continues to emerge in relationship to different fields.
